Hello I am Michi Masumi BA.MA

I am a Medway photographer/artist /and poet

I am currently studying for my Ph.D. my portfolio and my thesis.

My work is narrative-based art about social issues and intersectionality

Genres I mainly work within are: Portraits, Still Life, Floral, Fashion, and Street Photography

Describe what you do as a creative:

Tell us briefly about yourself so we understand where you come from. What’s your family background?:

I am a mum, Nan, and a Dog owner
Black British / Latino British

What did you want to be when you were growing up?:

First black female barrister and poet

Can you remember your earliest experience with art?:

Aged 9 I loved reading DH Lawerence, Thomas Hardy, and African/ Caribbean poetry

Why did you start doing what you do? What are your reasons? What's your story?:

Because I love art and as an expressionist artist, I am able to narrative my perspective of society and raise awareness for subjects that dear to my heart

How did you begin doing what you do? How and when did it start?:

I have been creative for over 40 years, 20 years as a professional and 6 years as a student.

What turns on your creativity? What triggers your need to create?:

Intersectionality

What do you like best about your work?:

It is authentic and focuses on everyday people and life
I specialize in Photographic Art and Intersectionality

When were you most satisfied in your work? What is your golden moment so far?:

Two awards in two weeks from Viewbug and The London Photography Awards this year (2023)

Describe a memorable response to your work? How did people respond to your work?:

I have many as for me the fact that my work encourages conversation, joy, and connection.
whenever this occurs it means I have done a good job.

What is the most exciting part of your work at the moment?:

Continuing to evolve using the combination of Art, Technology and Culture

What is your dream project?:

To have a Medway central Art shop/ studio where I can quarterly display my artistry and provide workshops on Photographic art and intersectionality

To create a photo archival project of Medway's ethnic minority communities and donate it to Medway archives and the Black British Centre of Archives in Brixton.London.

I am hoping to start with a smaller project in October 2023 -2026 which will be a photo documentary series of African and Caribbean residents of Medway.

Vivian Maier, Edward Enninful, Viola Davis, benjamin zephaniah, Horst P Horst, and Irving Penn

Where I am now

Happy being me, within my skin. Celebrating being me
doing my aromatherapy and gardening as serious hobbies and professionally taking photographs
