Profile Description

I make brightly coloured domestic ware and also sculptural ceramics, enjoying building up texture with brushes, stencils, splattering and resist. I enjoy the arbitrary & haphazard nature of the results which are as exciting as when opening the kiln. I am an exhibiting member of Kent Potters and London Potters and also do occasional specialist craft fairs.

Describe what you do as a creative:

I make pottery, hand thrown and hand built. Also use moulds I make myself

Tell us briefly about yourself so we understand where you come from. What’s your family background?:

I was originally a Theatre Designer, then moved into special education.( Emotional & behavioural difficulties). I moved to Hastings 10 years ago to concentrate on pottery.

What did you want to be when you were growing up?:

An artist and a psychologist

Can you remember your earliest experience with art?:

Drawing a rainy day picture whilst ill in bed- filling in the puddles in biro

Why did you start doing what you do? What are your reasons? What's your story?:

I did pottery workshops and night classes on and off during previous careers. Originally started when art teacher at Frewen College where there was an unused pottery- I wanted to be able to use it with the pupils.

How did you begin doing what you do? How and when did it start?:

I went to a pottery class in the next village, which allowed me to be a few lessons ahead of my pupils.

What turns on your creativity? What triggers your need to create?:

Looking at work of international potters (books/exhibition/instagram) Recent visit to South Korea with London Potters and International Ceramics Festival at Aberystwyth this summer

What do you like best about your work?:

The experimental nature of it- always new things to try
